Akron Police Shoot and Kill Unarmed Black Man
Body Camera Footage Released
On Sunday, the Akron Police Department released graphic body camera video and additional details about the shooting of Jayland Walker, a 25-year-old Black man. The incident occurred on June 27, 2022, at approximately 12:30 AM.
According to police, officers attempted to pull over Walker for a traffic violation. However, Walker fled in his vehicle, leading to a brief chase. Officers eventually stopped Walker's car and fired multiple shots, killing him. Walker was unarmed at the time of the shooting.
The body camera footage released by police shows the moments leading up to and during the shooting. The video is graphic and contains images of violence. The footage shows officers ordering Walker to show his hands, but he does not comply. Officers then approach Walker's vehicle and fire multiple shots.
The Akron Police Department has not yet released the names of the eight officers involved in the shooting. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is currently investigating the incident.
